Behind the Scenes of My Email Marketing Setup with Flodesk (And How I Use It to Actually Make Money)

Let’s get something straight: I didn’t start my business to become a full-time marketing machine.
But let’s face it… marketing is a part of the game. It didn’t take long to realize that if I wanted people to buy from me, I had to talk to them.
Regularly.
In a way that felt like ME and not a sales page in a trench coat pretending to be a newsletter.
That’s where email marketing came in the mix.
Except… the first few platforms I tried had me staring at my keyboard overwhelmed and uninspired.
Then one of my friends told me about Flodesk. And honestly? I haven’t looked back.
So if you’ve been quietly avoiding email marketing (even though every business coach on the internet keeps saying you “need a list”), this post is for you.
I'm breaking down exactly how I use Flodesk inside my business to connect, convert, and keep things way less complicated than they need to be.
First, why Flodesk?
I did NOT want to fuss with padding and columns and other tech hacks. I wanted to write a strong email, hit send, and know it’s going to land in inboxes and nurture my audience well.
But here’s what REALLY sealed the deal for me:
Visual-first editor - I can see what my email is going to look like as I write (it’s simple and aesthetically pleasing)!
Clean, beautiful templates - I don’t use templates heavily, but when I do, they don’t scream “I used a template.” Ya know?
Simple automation - Setting up a welcome sequence or a sales flow takes minutes, not hours.
That’s more of the tech side. But let’s talk about STRATEGY, because beautiful emails don’t mean anything if there’s no plan behind them.
My actual email marketing strategy
I’m here to connect with real humans, build real trust, and offer my audience things that actually solve their problems.
To help me achieve this, my current setup in Flodesk looks like this:
1. A clean opt-in process
Most people find me through my social content such as Instagram, Youtube, etc. And from there, they’re invited to grab a freebie or paid offer (dependind on where they find me).
Let’s use my Side Biz Starter Kit as an example. The Starter Kit is a low-ticket, high-value training that filters in people who are serious about starting a side business.
So when someone joins, I know two things:
They’ve paid…which means they’re invested.
They’ve watched or will watch the mini trainings, which gives them context before I ever land in their inbox.
That alone changes the entire vibe of my emails.
2. The welcome sequence (but not the boring kind)
Once they’re in, they get a short welcome sequence (4 emails across 7 days).
Each email is written like a letter to a bestie, not a lecture.
I’m introducing myself, sharing behind-the-scenes of how I built my business, and giving them ways to take action right now.
And yes, I pitch. Gently. Strategically. Not in a “BUY NOW OR ELSE” kind of way. More like: “Hey, if you’re vibing with this, here’s what to do next.”
I sell in context, not out of pressure.
3. The Weekly Huddle Newsletter
After the welcome flow, they drop into my main list. And from there, they hear from me about once a week (sometimes more).
These emails are not perfect.
They are not planned six months in advance.
But they are consistent, useful, and ME. I treat them like voice notes to my people. Sometimes they’re full of strategy. Other times, they’re storytelling with a soft pitch.
Because here’s what I’ve learned: If your emails sound like a carbon copy of every “online business” email, your subscribers will tune out.
But if they sound like YOU, people stick around.
And when they’re ready? They buy.
4. Let’s talk segmentation (the secret weapon nobody teaches you how to use)
Inside Flodesk, I segment my entire email list into different categories based on how/where they found me.
This also helps to track where people are in their journey:
Who bought the Side Biz Starter Kit
Who clicked on a service sales page
Who’s opted into a waitlist for a new offer
This helps me know who to follow up with, who’s likely to convert, and who might be better served by a different offer or touchpoint.
It’s also how I keep launches clean. I don’t blast everyone with everything. I send the right offers to the right people, which keeps my list happy AND converts better.
If you’re starting from zero, here’s where to begin:
Pick your platform - I recommend Flodesk (clearly), but whatever you choose, make sure it feels easy enough that you’ll actually use it.
Create one clear offer - Even if it’s $7 dollars. Get people used to investing with you. It builds the right list.
Write your first sequence - Think: what would I say if I could sit across from them at a coffee shop?
Send the emails -No one is judging your subject lines. Just send the thing!
Want to build a list without wanting to throw your laptop?
Let’s keep it simple.
