Episode 16: Intro to Gestalt Language Processing

A Conversation with Allison McDonald, CCC-SLP

In a recent episode of Co-Treat Corner, Allison McDonald, CCC-SLP, an experienced speech-language pathologist, shared her expertise on Gestalt Language Processing (GLP). This episode provides an introduction to GLP, exploring implications for supporting clients and families.

What is Gestalt Language Processing?

Gestalt Language Processing refers to a way of processing language that involves processing chunks or "gestalts" of language, rather than building up language from smaller units like words or sounds. This approach is often observed in children on the autism spectrum, but can also be present in other populations.

Unlike analytic language processors, who learn language by understanding and using individual words to form sentences, gestalt processors start by learning whole phrases or scripts they hear in their environment. Over time, they break down these chunks into smaller parts and “mix/match” them to create original sentences. This process can be more complex and requires a different approach to language intervention.

The Role of SLPs in Supporting Gestalt Language Processors

Allison McDonald highlighted the importance of recognizing when a child is a gestalt language processor, as this recognition guides the intervention strategies that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use. Traditional language therapy methods, which focus on teaching individual words and grammar, may not be effective for gestalt processors. Instead, SLPs may provide support to help clients move through the stages of gestalt language development. Allison emphasized the importance of understanding this process, as each child progresses through these stages at their own pace. Throughout the episode, Allison shared practical strategies for supporting children who are gestalt language processors and their family.

Moving Forward with Gestalt Language Processing

As awareness of Gestalt Language Processing grows, it’s essential for SLPs and educators to continue learning and adapting their approaches to meet the needs of their learners. Allison’s insights provide a solid foundation for understanding GLP and offer valuable guidance for professionals looking to support children who process language in this way.

This episode of Co-Treat Corner serves as an excellent introduction to Gestalt Language Processing, highlighting its importance in the field of speech-language pathology and offering practical strategies for effective intervention.
